The house where Shakespeare was born and raised. There was actually an auction in the 1800’s for the house. An American was planning to buy the house, have it dismantled, and ship it to the States, but Charles Dickens and a group of writers and friends raised enough money - equivalent to about 500,000 pounds today - to keep the house where it is. Acts of Parliament now protect the house. Yeah.
Before you can enter the house you go through a bit of historical background and the Shakespeare Hall of Fame which included our friends Leo and David. We also stopped by Anne Hathaway’s cottage (his wife, not the Oscar winner) but didn’t have time to go in.
Fun fact: The owner of the Gen 11 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car lives in Stratford-Upon-Avon. He sold the car but kept the plates, which now reside on his black Honda.
